Our estimates are up to three times higher than those of Fernández-Villaverde and Jones (2020), especially early in the sample. The coronavirus reproduction rate spiked at around seven by the end of February. We find that there must have been more than 600 infected individuals in the US by mid-February to justify the trajectory of COVID-19 fatalities observed through 30 September. We infer how many infections there must have been to justify the trajectory of COVID-19 fatalities observed in the data given the policies that were in place and historical mobility across states.įigure 1 shows the cumulative number of estimated infections and the estimated reproduction rate of the virus in the US. A key benefit of our approach is that it relies on death counts only. We develop a new multi-region epidemiological model and apply it to state-level COVID-19 data from the US between 12 February and 30 September 2020. Travel bans are the least effective policies according to our study. Our study highlights state and federal mask mandates as very effective tools to contain the virus. More than two-thirds of all US COVID-19 deaths could have been prevented if the federal government had required all states to adopt policies that mirrored those of the earliest-acting states. Our results show that while state protocols were largely effective, the lack of federal policies contributed to an accelerated spread of coronavirus nationwide. Using the US as a case study, we develop a novel model of COVID-19 transmission that incorporates state and federal policy decisions, as well as interstate mobility that enables the spread of the disease (Coven et al. We answer these questions in a new paper (Renne et al. How effective are policies implemented in one state when other states adopt none? And what could be gained from unified federal policies? However, state governments in many countries can independently implement policies while others, including the federal government, do not. A large amount of research has been dedicated to studying the impact of different policies on COVID-19 infections and fatalities (Chernozhukov et al. Lochridge, who has experience as a submersible pilot and diver, was hired by OceanGate in May 2015 as an independent contractor and later became an employee, according to documents. However, Lochridge says he made the report at the request of CEO Stockton Rush because the plans for the Titan were being passed from the engineering team to his operations department. In its lawsuit against Lochridge, OceanGate said they did not hire him to do engineering work. "The paying passengers would not be aware, and would not be informed, of this experimental design, the lack of non-destructive testing of the hull, or that hazardous flammable materials were being used within the submersible," court documents state. Lochridge said his concerns were ignored and he was told equipment did not exist for the type of test he was asking for. According to Lochridge, acoustic monitoring only detects a problem in the hull right before it fails. Lochridge said he encouraged a nondestructive scan of the hull to check for any defects, rather than solely relying on acoustic monitoring. That was due to OceanGate's design of the vessel, which did not meet federal standards, according to the complaint. The Titan was being designed to travel 4,000 meters below the surface, which had never been done by an OceanGate vessel with a hull made of carbon fiber, Lochridge stated in court documents.įurthermore, Lochridge said vessel's viewport, which allows passengers to look outside, was only certified by the manufacturer to withstand pressures at 1,300 meters below the surface. Former director of marine operations David Lochridge sent a report he authored in January 2018, which voiced concerns that the hull used carbon fiber and not a metallic composition. Firstly, they predicted that the number of 4TB would decrease by more than half, from 35,000 to 15,000 in reality, adding drives took priority, and by Q1 2020 there were only marginally fewer 4TB drives. Drive days represents the number of days that all of the drives being observed were operational, and 366 is used because 2020 is a leap year.īackblaze made several predictions based on the stats in Q1 2019. Backblaze calculates the AFR using the equation drive failures/ (drives days/366) * 100. In Q1 of 2020, four hard drive models from three manufacturers had no failures. This marks a significant improvement on Q1 in 2019, which saw an AFR of 1.56%. The report notes that the Annualised Failure Rate (AFR) for Q1 was 1.07%, the lowest for any quarter since Backblaze started keeping track in 2013. With so many drives deployed across their four data centres, Backblaze has a unique insight on hard drive durability. These hard drives are sourced from a range of manufacturers, and vary in capacity from 4TB to 16TB. Spread across four data centres, Backblaze’s cloud storage ecosystem has 132,339 spinning hard drives. But how much of a problem is this with modern hard drives?īlackblaze’s recent report detailing hard drive stats for the first quarter of 2020 is incredibly interesting, as it shows that modern hard drives are actually quite resilient. One of the main drawbacks of hard disk drives in their limited lifespan, particularly if they see a lot of use. But magnetic platters are also capable of holding cast amounts of data, and this is one of the reasons why the hard drive hasn’t been completely replaced by the solid-state drive (SSD) just yet. Hard disk drives (HDDs) are mechanical, and while they’re much more susceptible to physical damage, the data recovery process is much simpler. Could we be seeing a slow but delayed demise? But a recent report from Backblaze has thrown some doubt at this. Many have long-predicted the end of the hard disk drive. TimeTrex is a web-based time management for employee payroll. I cannot prove, but I believe it was a way for the desk man to make 10 euro while working.Īdditionally, the room description, shows that there was a refrigerator a microwave etc that I assumed would be in the room. When we checked out they refused to refund our ten euro for the keys, so on principal we kept them. The keys already had a tag with room 203 on them when he delivered them. He miraculously delivered them to our room about a minute and a half later, and said "the key shop is very close". They charged us 10 Euro to "Go have keys made". My biggest complaint was that when we checked in we wanted two sets of keys. We actually ended up using the shared shower that other people use simply because it was more convenient to use. but the hanger for the handheld shower was broken, so it was difficult to take a shower, holding the shower in one hand in the soap in the other and trying not to flood the rest of the bathroom. I can give you an example of the parameter format after decodeURL action: URI encoding or decoding wasn't successful. If the optional flag quote is true, the quotation mark character (') is also translated. Therefore, I want to try using Regex because I think the replacement condition quite difficult since the URL text is inside an attribute/parameter. For html encoding, there's cgi.escape from the standard library: > help(cgi.escape) cgi.escape escape(s, quoteNone) Replace special characters '&', '<' and '>' to HTML-safe sequences. Unfortunately, the browser does not have any built-in ability to handle the decoding, so we have to use a function for that.It works, but we're using this parameter value to be rendered as HTML tag, and in order to render an image inside HTML tag the URL cannot consists of Ampersand character, it needs to be replaced as %26. Just load your HTML-encoded string and it will automatically get converted back to a plain string. So as I've mentioned we got a response parameter from an API, and we already have decode the parameter value using this extension: Just paste the URL Encoded text and instantly decode.
